Zusammenfassung

Myalgische Enzephalomyelitis/Chronisches Fatigue-Syndrom (ME/CFS) ist keine neue Erkrankung – erste Beschreibungen gab es bereits in den 1930er-Jahren [1]. Dennoch blieb ME/CFS über Jahrzehnte hinweg ein medizinisches Randthema. Für Betroffene bedeutete das oft ein Leben in Unsichtbarkeit, Isolation und ohne adäquate medizinische Versorgung. Erst durch die COVID-19-­Pandemie und das vermehrte Auftreten von Post COVID – einer postviralen Erkrankung mit Überschneidungen zu ME/CFS – rückten postinfektiöse Krankheitsverläufe stärker in den Fokus von ­Forschung, Öffentlichkeit und Gesundheitssystem. Was genau ­verbindet ME/CFS und Post COVID? Wo liegen Unterschiede? Und wie ist der aktuelle Stand bei Diagnostik und Therapie von ME/CFS? Dieser Beitrag ist Teil 4 einer Artikelreihe über ME/CFS und beleuchtet die Zusammenhänge mit Post COVID sowie ­aktuelle Entwicklungen in der medizinischen Versorgung von Menschen mit ME/CFS.

Abstract

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is not a new disease – it was first described in the 1930s. Nevertheless, ME/CFS remained a marginal medical topic for decades. For those affected, this often meant a life of invisibility, isolation, and lack of adequate medical care. It was only with the COVID-19 ­pandemic and the increased incidence of post-COVID – a post-viral illness with overlaps with ME/CFS – that post-infectious disease courses became more of a focus for research, the public, and the healthcare system. What exactly connects ME/CFS and post-COVID? What are the differences? And what is the current status of ME/CFS diagnostics and treatment? This article is part four of a series on ME/CFS and examines the connections with post-COVID and current developments in the medical care of people with ME/CFS.
