I hope you are all well and had a good start into the new year 2026! At the beginning of the year, we are focusing on a canine disease that is currently of great interest in veterinary circles. We are talking about werewolf syndrome.

The term ‘werewolf syndrome’ is used casually here, and it is not a proper veterinary term. Owners have reported that their dogs have begun to howl like wolves and experience severe neurological symptoms. Since summer 2025, this has occurred frequently across Germany, and in other European countries.

What are the symptoms of werewolf syndrome in dogs?

Affected dogs howl and bark loudly and constantly. They experience sudden panic attacks and uncontrolled movements. In some advanced cases, they have epileptic attacks. This is referred to as an acute, episodic behavioural disorder with anxiety and severe neurological symptoms.
